Uluu has announced it has received $2.1 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Industry Growth Program. The grant aims to support the commercialisation of Uluu’s innovative plastic alternative made from seaweed.

The funding will enable Uluu to significantly increase its production capacity, scaling up tenfold from pilot operations to a facility producing around 10 tonnes annually. This expansion will help the company bring more sustainable materials to market and accelerate the deployment of its products in real-world applications.

“This funding allows us to move decisively into the next phase: scaling production and validating our materials in-market,” said Uluu co-founder and co-CEO Michael Kingsbury. He emphasized that the goal is to deliver their seaweed-based plastics to more customers and develop a wider range of commercial products more quickly.

The increased capacity will support a series of product trials, focusing initially on cosmetics packaging and fashion. Uluu plans to collaborate with brands to develop prototypes and capsule collections that demonstrate the versatility and performance of its materials.

Additionally, the project will work towards key regulatory approvals, including food-grade certification, home compostability, and sustainable seaweed certification. Mr. Kingsbury highlighted that successful scaling involves more than just volume. It requires meeting strict standards and performance expectations.

This government support marks a significant step forward for Uluu’s mission to replace conventional plastics with more sustainable, seaweed-based alternatives, aligning with global efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote circular economy solutions.
