Due to be installed next month, each hangar provides storage for up to six bicycles. The hangars can be accessed via lock and key or via an app in some locations.

Dubbed Bike Nests, the service will be managed by Lockit Safe. 40 will go online across Bristol, with Ashley, Bedminster, Bishopston and Ashley Down, Brislington West, Cotham, Easton, Eastville, Hotwells and Harbouside, Lawrence Hill, Redland, Southville, St George West, and Windmill Hill set to benefit. A further 40 will be introduced in other areas within the West of England Combined Authority boundaries.

‘It’s great news that so many new cycle hangars will be on our streets soon, offering our residents a safe place to store and access their bikes,’ said Cllr Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport & Connectivity Committee. ‘I hope this will encourage even more people to start cycling regularly, which has so many benefits for your health and wellbeing, as well as helping to reduce congestion and air pollution across the city.’

‘This is all part of our work, supported by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, to improve transport infrastructure to make cycling safer, easier and more appealing, such as our plans for major transport corridors, including the A37 and A4018 and the A4 Portway projects,’ he added.

According to a 2024 poll by Sustrans support for active travel investment is increasing in Bristol. 65% of respondents backed financing for walking and wheeling, including cycling, compared with 55% when a similar study was conducted in 2021.
