RSB’s Blanca De Ulibarri and Esther Hegel recently joined industry leaders and researchers at Copenhagen Airport to participate in the “Bold Vision for Airports in 2050” workshop with partners from the ALIGHT project. This collaborative event aimed to develop a shared vision for smart airports that seamlessly integrate into the smart city framework.

The workshop focused on identifying key technological, environmental, and social trends that will shape the future of air travel. Of course, a central theme was the utilisation of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and smart energy management to drive sustainability and innovation, and we were happy to share our collective knowledge on the topics.

  • Collaboration with sister projects: RSB, alongside representatives from the ALIGHT, STARGATE, OLGA, and TULIPS projects, collaborated to draft and discuss nine pillars for sustainable airports in 2050.
  • Industry insights: The workshop included 56 participants from airports, aviation associations, research entities, consultants, and NGOs.
  • Policy focus: The workshop provided valuable insights into relevant EC legislation, with particular interest in the upcoming Union Database.
  • Net zero strategies: Participants learned about the net-zero strategies of three major European airports: Copenhagen, Schiphol, and Brussels.
  • Non-CO2 impact focus: RSB’s Blanca De Ulibarri moderated the Sustainable Airport Platform meeting, with a focus on SAF and Non-CO2 impacts.
  • Knowledge sharing: As our R&D Projects Team strengthens, we will continue to extract main findings from the workshop, and continue knowledge exchange and discussions during the next online Sustainable Airport Platform meeting in mid-November.
  • Policy advocacy: In addition, RSB will bring its insights to the attention of policymakers during a Policy Maker Workshop next spring in Brussels, aiming to include MEPs and sister projects.

RSB would like to thanks the hosts, Copenhagen Airports, and the organisers of the workshop.

This workshop provided a valuable platform for RSB’s R&D Projects Team to engage with key stakeholders, share their expertise on SAF and sustainability certification, and contribute to the development of a shared vision for a more sustainable future for air travel.
