Lummus Technology, a global leader in process and energy solutions, announced that Vioneo has selected its Novolen® polypropylene (PP) technology. The new plant will be built in Antwerp, Belgium, as part of Vioneo’s innovative complex. This complex aims to be the world’s first industrial-scale fossil-free plastics production facility.
It will use green methanol as feedstock and will be highly electrified with renewable electricity. Additionally, renewable hydrogen will be a key component of its operations.
The plant will have a capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year, or 200 KTA. It will use 100% segregated green propylene and ethylene as feedstocks. These inputs will produce a broad range of polypropylene grades. The plastics will serve as direct replacements for fossil-based alternatives. With high-purity feedstock and proven technology, the resulting polypropylene will be fully traceable and CO2 negative. This will help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions significantly.
Alex Hogan, CEO of Vioneo, said, “Vioneo is leading the way in the plastics industry’s transition to cleaner production.” He emphasized that the plant will prove large-scale green methanol-derived plastics are economically viable. Hogan stated, “Partnering with Lummus and licensing Novolen® technology is key to this vision.”
The plant will produce certified green propylene and ethylene from Methanol-To-Olefins (MTO) technology. These will produce high-quality, bio-polypropylene grades, supporting a sustainable plastics economy.
Lummus’ scope includes licensing the technology, providing the process design package, supporting front-end engineering, and supplying catalysts during operations. Their Novolen® PP technology is part of the Verdene
suite, which includes proven solutions for bio-based polymer production. The Verdene
suite aims for reduced or negative net CO2 emissions by sequestering carbon within the polymers. The resulting plastics function exactly like traditional hydrocarbon-based polymers.
