Slovenian biotechnology company Acies Bio announced progress on a fermentation capacity expansion, with a new 30m³ production facility expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The facility in Kamnik, Slovenia will include the 30m³ production fermentor plus new seed train and auxiliary vessels for storage and feeding. The company says construction is advancing on schedule with key equipment milestones completed.
Acies Bio positions the expansion as filling a gap in European biomanufacturing infrastructure. The company provides contract fermentation services for partners developing bio-based chemicals, agricultural biotech products, food ingredients, and specialty biomolecules.
The new capacity supports projects from early process optimization through demonstration scale to industrial production. That full-cycle capability matters for companies trying to avoid shipping strains and processes across continents as they scale.
“The expansion strengthens our ability to support customers with technologically advanced scale-up and contract manufacturing services closer to their markets,” said Štefan Fujs, director at Acies Bio.
Martin Kavšček, head of business development, said early commercial engagement has been strong, pointing to unmet demand for flexible precision fermentation capacity in Europe.
The investment follows Acies Bio’s 2021 addition of a 6.5m³ fermentation volume focused on scale-up of microbial technologies. The new 30m³ facility represents a shift toward contract manufacturing at production scale.
Several European countries have been pushing to build regional biomanufacturing capacity to reduce dependence on Asian and North American suppliers. Slovenia’s position in Central Europe offers access to both Western and Eastern European markets.
