Algenesis Labs, a San Diego-based sustainable materials company, has received ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System. The international standard recognizes organizations that demonstrate effective environmental impact management through operational controls and sustainable practices.
The certification followed a comprehensive third-party audit of the company’s facilities and processes. ISO 14001 validates that Algenesis has established systems to manage environmental responsibilities across its operations, from material sourcing to waste management and pollution reduction.
Dr. Stephen Mayfield, CEO and founder of Algenesis Labs, described the achievement as a significant milestone. He emphasized that the certification aligns the company’s internal operations with its mission to create solutions for plastic pollution. The certification demonstrates that environmental commitment extends to internal practices as the company grows.
Algenesis develops Soleic, a plant-based polyurethane technology designed as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. The material is engineered to biodegrade fully and avoid creating persistent microplastics. The company positions Soleic for use across industrial and commercial applications, including footwear, apparel, and consumer goods.
Nick Sandland, Chief Business Officer, noted that ISO certification provides operational infrastructure for global expansion. The certification helps the company meet compliance requirements from international partners across various sectors. It also positions Algenesis to adapt to evolving environmental regulations.
The ISO 14001 certification adds to existing credentials including REACH compliance and USDA BioPreferred certifications. These designations support the company’s market positioning in sustainable materials.
The certification arrives as Algenesis scales production of its polyurethane materials. Traditional petroleum-based plastics release particles that persist in environments for extended periods. Algenesis states that Soleic materials biodegrade in natural environments, addressing concerns about microplastic accumulation.
