Date:

Chery has opened Australian reservations for its Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute, confirming customer deliveries will begin on February 1, 2027, and released further specifications for its rival to the BYD Shark 6, GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, JAC Hunter and Ford Ranger PHEV.

Pricing remains unannounced, but customers can secure a place in the queue with a fully refundable $1000 reservation fee. Those who reserve before official sales commence and subsequently purchase and take delivery will receive a $2000 Bunnings gift card and three years or 45,000km of complimentary scheduled servicing, subject to conditions.

Reservations opened on October 1. The February delivery date follows earlier plans for an Australian arrival in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The new indicative Australian specification sheet details an Ultimate AWD variant, although Chery has yet to confirm pricing or the complete local line-up.

The Stockman’s principal point of difference in the growing plug-in hybrid ute segment is its diesel engine. Its established PHEV competitors combine electric assistance with petrol power.

Chery’s 2.5-litre turbo-diesel produces 140kW and 450Nm, with combined hybrid system outputs of 350kW and 800Nm delivered through a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

That matches the 350kW output of the BYD Shark 6 Performance while exceeding its 700Nm torque claim. The Shark 6 Premium produces 321kW and 650Nm.

The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV claims 300kW and 750Nm, while the Ford Ranger PHEV produces 207kW and 697Nm. JAC’s Hunter claims a higher 360kW output, so the Stockman will join the more powerful end of the segment without taking the outright power crown.

Another rival is the new GWM Cannon Hi4-T, Australia’s cheapest plug-in hybrid ute, which produces 310kW and 750Nm.

A 34kWh lithium iron phosphate battery mounted beneath the cargo tub supplies the Stockman’s electric drive system. Chery now lists an electric-only range of 96km with all-terrain tyres, with the specification sheet identifying the ADR81/03 WLTC laboratory test cycle.

Earlier information quoted up to 100km under the NEDC cycle, so the revised figure should not be interpreted as a direct four-kilometre reduction in driving range.

Charging capability is rated at up to 6.6kW AC and 70kW DC. Two 230V power outlets are also listed, although the supplied specification sheet does not state their maximum output.

Chery quotes combined fuel consumption of 1.1L/100km and an 80-litre diesel tank. As with other plug-in hybrids, the laboratory fuel figure reflects the contribution of battery power and should not be treated as the consumption owners can expect during sustained towing or driving with a depleted battery.

The precise braked towing limit is now listed as 3495kg, slightly below the previously advertised 3500kg. Maximum towball download is 350kg.

That puts the Stockman effectively alongside the 3500kg towing ratings of the Ranger PHEV, Cannon and Cannon Alpha PHEVs, JAC Hunter and Shark 6 Performance. The Shark 6 Premium retains a lower 2500kg limit.

The Stockman’s listed 2735kg kerb mass and 3500kg gross vehicle mass imply a payload of 765kg before accessories, occupants, luggage and towball download are accounted for. A 350kg towball load would leave 415kg for those other demands.

The Stockman’s implied 765kg maximum payload falls short of the Ford Ranger PHEV XLT’s 973kg, JAC Hunter’s 915kg, GWM Cannon Hi4-T’s 835kg and BYD Shark 6 Premium’s 790kg. However, it exceeds the Shark 6 Performance’s 725kg and the 685kg quoted for both Cannon Alpha PHEV grades.

Its 6500kg gross combination mass also means owners cannot simultaneously use the full 3500kg vehicle mass allowance and tow a 3495kg trailer.

For off-road use, Chery lists high- and low-range four-wheel drive, front, centre and rear differential locks, crawl control and a turn-assist function.

The suspension combines a double-wishbone front layout with leaf springs at the rear. Standard wheels are 17-inch alloys with 285/70 all-terrain tyres, while the specification sheet quotes 247mm minimum ground clearance, a 30-degree approach angle and a 25-degree departure angle.

The Stockman measures 5450mm long, 2010mm wide and 1930mm high, with a 3250mm wheelbase. Its tub is listed as 1560mm long, 1560mm wide and 505mm deep, with 1220mm between the wheel arches.

Inside, the indicative Ultimate specification includes a 15.6-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital instrument display, head-up display and 14-speaker sound system.

Synthetic leather upholstery, powered front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, sliding and reclining rear seats, dual-zone climate control and wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also listed.

Safety equipment includes seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane assistance, blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera.

Chery has previously appointed Melbourne engineering company Premcar to undertake Australian testing and validation, including assessing the Stockman’s ride and handling on local roads.

Chery lists a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and an eight-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty for the high-voltage battery, subject to conditions.

All specifications remain indicative and subject to change ahead of the ute’s Australian launch.
