French greentech company AFYREN and organic fertilization specialist Terrial have renewed their strategic partnership through a new multi-year supply contract worth tens of millions of euros. The agreement covers a significant portion of the bio-based potassium fertilizer produced at AFYREN’s NEOXY biorefinery.
The co-product arises naturally during AFYREN’s primary fermentation process. While the company utilizes natural microorganisms to convert non-food biomass into bio-based organic acids, it simultaneously recovers a potassium-rich streams from the organic feedstock. Terrial processes this mineral co-product into high-value organic fertilizer formulations marketed under the FORTI K+ brand. The compacted format allows farmers to apply the nutrient easily using standard agricultural spreading equipment.
Potassium is a vital macronutrient that improves plant water regulation, root strength, and stress resilience. It plays an essential role in fruit and vegetable cultivation, viticulture, and broad-acre cropping systems. By recovering potassium from bioeconomy supply chains, the process transforms organic industrial residues into circular nutrient inputs for regenerative soil health.
At full operational capacity, the agreement could supply nearly a quarter of France’s agricultural potassium sulfate demand. This circular model provides a local, low-carbon alternative to mined synthetic fertilizers. By replacing imported mineral inputs with domestically generated fermentation co-products, the collaboration enhances regional soil fertility while insulating European farmers from international supply shocks.
The partnership demonstrates how industrial biotechnology can maximize resource efficiency. Converting every fraction of biological feedstock into functional agricultural inputs strengthens both the circular bioeconomy and national food autonomy.
