Belgian biotechnology company Zymofix has selected Deinze, Belgium, for its new flagship biomanufacturing facility. The site selection marks a transition to commercial production for Zyft, the company’s solid-state fermentation platform.

Solid-state fermentation mimics natural soil conditions by cultivating microorganisms on solid organic substrates rather than in liquid bioreactors. Liquid systems often struggle to yield viable spores or robust cell structures for sensitive species. Zyft solves this scaling challenge by growing living organisms on standardized biomass substrates derived from agricultural residues, providing an optimal physiological environment for delicate strains.

The platform boasts broad biological versatility. It has successfully cultivated over 170 distinct strains of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. Zyft also integrates cultivation directly with product formulation. By retaining the solid biomass substrate inside the final product, the platform avoids harsh processing steps. This preserves cell wall integrity and extends shelf life.

The initial phase represents a €6 million capital investment. Funding comes from customer revenues and a Series A round led by First Imagine!, alongside VP Capital, HTGF, and The Nest Family Office. Production starts in late 2027 at 300 tonnes per year. This volume can inoculate roughly one million hectares of farmland. A planned €25 million expansion in 2028 will boost capacity to 2,000 tonnes annually.

Zymofix operates as a contract biomanufacturing partner. It collaborates with agrifood partners to scale targeted biological strains. Primary applications include microbial biostimulants, biofertilizers, and biocontrol agents that enhance soil health. The platform also targets environmental bioremediation and industrial sectors that require high-density microbial biomass produced at commercial scale.

Scaling solid-state fermentation offers a sustainable path to replace synthetic agrochemicals with living alternatives. The Deinze facility strengthens European biomanufacturing capabilities for sustainable agriculture.
